JW Smith’s Obituary/Program

“JW” can now finally reveal the mystery to some that he was born, John William Smith on July 20, 1948 in Kelton, South Carolina to parents, the late Bennie Smith and Willie Mae Holley Smith. JW was the youngest of eleven children and was predeceased by three brothers, Victor “Bug” Lindsay, Columbus and Vernon Smith, and two sisters, Erlean S. Baker and Mittie Ruth Smith. Also preceding him in death was his special and last aunt, Docia Kershaw Smith, age 105 (March, 2017). JW was reared in a Christian environment and was baptized in 1960 at Emanuel Chapel Baptist Church in Kelton, SC. JW attended Benjamin E. Mays Consolidated School in Pacolet Mills, SC and graduated in 1966. With the assistance and encouragement of his former high school teacher, mentor and counselor, Mr. Monson Owens, JW enrolled in Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC. While at J.C. Smith, JW pledged and was inducted into the Delta Chapter of Nu Gamma Alpha Fraternity, Inc. After graduating in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in Economics, JW, knowing the sacrifices that were made for him to acquire a college education and experience, he swiftly delivered his diploma to his mother, saying: “Here, this is for you.”
